I can live with not being familiar with the backstory (even though you are flung into the plot with seemingly no explanation whatsoever), but some of the graphical glitches and annoyances are unforgivable. What is truly disappointing is the lack of detail and effort that has been put into the technical aspects of the gameplay. This is a straight-jacketed approach to gaming, and not one which will be popular with any gamer worth his salt.

This only seems to occur during strictly scripted end of level sections of the game, meaning that you can't gain experience points and use them to transfer at your own will. What then of the 'ultimate alien', the promise that Ben can transform into a souped-up version of his alien forms? Well, not much as it happens. The 'choice' you are given of whom to play is clearly illusory. What also becomes apparent is that if you don't choose the three 'suggested' alien forms, the level is impossible to play, as you need their specific powers in order to complete certain tasks. The attacks are all formulaic, and when fighting bad guys, bashing the square button is pretty much all you need to do.Ĭollecting coins by smashing onscreen objects (vases mainly) lets you power up alien forms, but this is done very quickly so they soon become maxed out. Ben battles boss-level villains with whom he clearly has some sort of back history, but this is merely skimmed over, with no attempt to draw in a player who may not be an aficionado of the series. The storyline is weak, and characterisation cursory at best. If this sounds uninspiring, then believe me you're on the right track.
